Chelsea are ready to make a £30m move for Wayne Rooney from Manchester United rivals if the striker fails to agree terms over a contract extension at Manchester United, according to the Daily Mail.
Rooney has just 18 months left to run on his current contract and the Mail claim Manchester United executive chairman Ed Woodward is in contact with his agent, Paul Stretford, about setting up talks this month to discuss a new deal.
However, doubts continue to grow over whether the 28-year-old will commit his long-term future to Old Trafford – particularly after Manchester United’s disappointing season so far – and it’s believed he’s reluctant to sign a fresh deal while the clubs top-four hopes remain in the balance.
Manchester United have endured a torrid start to life under David Moyes with the defending champions currently sitting seventh in the Premier League table while they were also knocked out of the FA Cup by Swansea City on Sunday, and there are serious question marks over whether Rooney will commit the final few years at the peak of his career to a club that appears to be on a downward spiral.
This has prompted fresh speculation that he could move at the end of the season with the Mail claiming Chelsea will be ready to table a £30m offer if no contract extension has been signed by the summer.
Chelsea were strongly linked with a move for Rooney last summer with Jose Mourinho openly admitting the former Everton youngster was his primary target and the west Londoners saw at least one formal offer rejected.
Manchester United eventually ruled out selling the striker at any price and he has returned to something like his best form this campaign, despite niggling injuries hampering his progress.
